Matthew Scobie (Kāi Tahu), Georgia McLellan (Whakatōhea & Ngāi Te Rangi), Jack Barrett (Ngāpuhi)

AbstractIn this collaborative keynote, McLellan, Barrett and Scobie will discuss how they came to work together through a shared appreciation of diverse and community economies as an interpretative framework for Māori economic empowerment. They will discuss their report on the transformative potential of Māori economies where they adapted core aspects of the diverse and community economies approach, such as the iceberg metaphor and ethical coordinates, into a wayfinding Māori economies metaphor. The wayfinding metaphor includes a set of four ethical coordinates that help navigate towards Māori diverse and community economies. It also includes four wayfinding challenges to maintaining and advancing Māori economic practices. These coordinates and challenges were surfaced during practical case studies. The rōpū (collective) will conclude by offering future pathways that take the possibilities of diverse and community economies for Indigenous self-determination seriously, including the need to remain attentive to colonial structural challenges.

BiographyMatthew Scobie is Kāi Tahu (Kāti Huirapa) and Tauiwi. He is the author of the BWB text ’The Economic Possibilities of Decolonisation’ and teaches Indigenous economics and corporate responsibility in the Business School at the University of Canterbury. His research is committed to Indigenous reconstruction and draws from political economy and critical accounting.Georgia McLellan (Whakatōhea & Ngāi Te Rangi) is a Lecturer in the Marketing and International Business department at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). She recently completed her PhD on Whakatōhea kuku (green-lipped mussel) economies, examining Indigenous economic practices through a Māori perspective. Her research interests centre on Māori economies, Indigenous economic geography, and Indigenous political economy.Jack Barrett (Ngāpuhi) is a Lecturer at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Business School. He recently completed his PhD, which explored Indigenous-led housing provision through community enterprise. His research interests focus on diverse forms of Indigenous business and economy, and their transformative potential.
