AbstractRebecca Solnit’s latest book "The Beginning Comes After the End" is a sequel to her earlier work "Hope in the Dark," published a decade ago. In both books, Solnit (a US-based activist/public intellectual) counters what at times seems like an overwhelmingly dystopian world to acknowledge the deep and positive changes that have occurred over past decades. She looks to this past to show “how change works … and how what once seemed impossible becomes actuality.” At the same time, she acknowledges the ongoing legacy of harms such as colonisation, and the immediacy of issues such as climate change. In this session, Community Economies thinkers and doers reflect on Solnit’s insights into processes of transformation, and how this helps with thinking and doing strategies that are relevant for a change agenda in these current times.
