Litter Free Leonia began in May of 2026. The first event, organized by founder Benjamin Kim, was held on Leonia Day of that year. However, to go beyond that, it all started with an idea about making our town cleaner. That idea soon turned into a plan, and that plan eventually turned into a project. Every member chipped in with their own ideas or support, and in the end, our beginning as a group did not simply begin with an event, but began the moment everybody came together for a shared purpose: making our town cleaner.
Our group wouldn't have committed to our project if not for the incentive of doing so. First, litter is dangerous to our town and is harmful to everybody. Over 2 million pieces of litter are dropped every day in the U.S alone. From decreased property values, to potential health risks through microplastics and rodents, to damaging our local environment, litter is an issue that Leonia must stop if we are to protect ourselves from economic, health related, and environmental scares.
In the end, Litter Free Leonia is dedicated to one main goal: cleaning our town and spreading awareness. Leonia is a great town, and it would be even greater if it were to be cleaner. We believe that everyone, regardless of grades, status, or connections, can help our community. The best part? You can help. You can be more mindful about your garbage, educate others about the dangers of litter, or even join our volunteering group if you qualify for the requirements.
