Literally MAKEing for K12 Educators

An integrated approach to teaching Engineering and Literacy

In many schools the primary focus of much learning and PD falls upon literacy. It is a skill that is vital to learning anything as well as being a primary driver of standardized test decision making.

While we all know how important it is to have focus on many aspects of learning we can do something about integrating our work and disciplines with literacy. We don't have to earn a English degree to help play a role in the development of literacy. We also don' t have to sacrifice our passion for our own content. We can marry these fields together to create powerful learning.

Let's explore how we can do this work together.

Workshop Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to combine ELA with makerspace and Engineering principles

2. Participants will be able to build simple an effective lesson/activity incorporating reading a picture book to launch the design challenge.

3. Participants will learn how to create and solve open ended design challenges using the everyday materials.

4. Participants will learn how to build 21st century skills.
