Summarizing 

• Write a paragraph about the text in your own words (Wu et al., 2021)

• Can use the following words to support writing:

  • Fiction:

    • Somebody

    • Wanted 

    • But 

    • So

    • Then

  • Non Fiction:

    • Who

    • What 

    • Where

    • When 

    • Why

Predicting 

• Make an inference based on clues from the text and student's prior knowledge (Wu et al., 2021)

• Can be done before and during reading a fiction text 

Close Reading 

BURN Strategy

• B - "box the paragraph" 

• U - "underline the key details"

• R - "read the details" 

• N - "note the main idea in the margin next to the text" 

• Begin with 1 paragraph before moving on to multi-paragraph texts
