Below are teaching materials and activities that I have created for my placement or for extracurricular learning activities. All of these materials were created by me but in some cases I worked with a community or professional partner to run the event/workshop and to introduce students to different opportunities and perspectives in the landscape horticulture profession. If you have any questions please let me know!
On behalf of Landscape Ontario I designed and presented 5 virtual summer camp workshops for Skills Ontario Virtual summer camps to introduce grade 7-9 students to careers in the trades. Activities were designed to be hands on using common household materials or materials that were mailed to participants. Topics included:
On behalf of Come Alive Outside I designed 5 activities to engage elementary and high school students in the future landscape design of their schoolyard.
Semester one takes place during the fall and winter months. For Green Industries this means not a lot of things are growing. Growing microgreens allows students to watch and alter the environmental conditions to allow for a seed to germinate. Microgreens also introduces the topic of innovative business opportunities in agriculture that can take place with minimal space, while still providing a high quality and high-value product.
Before winter holidays, I teach students how to make a winter urn using evergreens as part of the floriculture unit. We talk about the different types of plants and plant materials used as well as how to arrange them using different design principles and floriculture techniques. During COVID we had in-class and online students. In-class students worked on full-sized planters that were displayed around the school. Online students were provided with a kit and video instructions so they could also participate.
At the beginning of the landscape design unit I introduced students to the design process and provided them with an organizer where they could check off what they had done and the steps they still needed to take to crerate a great landscape design!
On behalf of Landscape Ontario, I worked with 10,000 trees to create an experiential learning day for students in a local Green Industry class. This program met the criteria of ICE and provided each student the opportunity to work to an ICE certificate. Students studied plant growth requirements and created plant profiles. Their understanding was then put to the test as they partnered with college students and industry professionals to learn the skills and safety behind tree planting.
On behalf of Landscape Ontario and Come Alive Outside I worked with, Wentworth Landscapes, and Canada Blooms and amazing volunteers to make the Canada Blooms Green Street a reality.
The Canada Blooms Green Street highlights the physical and mental benefits of the diverse landscapes in our communities. This play space was aimed to promote green time, not screen time. The Green Street Garden was the place where kids and kids at heart could play in a way that inspires creativity and imagination!
I brought together the partners and planned Stihl Experiential Learning day with the support of my boss at Landscape Ontario and Stihl staff.
The Stihl Experiential Learning day provided hands-on learning experiences for college and high school students where they learned the safe application of a variety of products from the amazing Stihl technical trainers. This day was designed to promote connections between landscape professionals, college students and high school students and engage students who learned the safe operation of a variety of equipment commonly used in the profession.
