Dr. Lisa Antoine received her B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University and North Carolina AT State University, respectively. During her undergraduate years, Lisa was a cooperative education trainee at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS and a Summer Engineer for Shell Pipeline Corporation in Midland, TX and New Orleans, LA. As a graduate student, she interned at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. Her thesis work was the implementation of an expert system (using artificial intelligence) for power transmission planning. She earned her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Lisa’s dissertation research included the use of neural imaging and computational fluid dynamics to predict the optimal catheter placement selection for therapy infusion to treat brain tumors. In 2022, Dr. Antoine earned her Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) Practitioner Certificate.
As a postdoctoral researcher in the UAB Department of Psychology with Dr. Burel Goodin (Washington University) and Dr. Roger Fillingim (University of Florida) as principal co-investigators, Lisa uses neural imaging to investigate the effects of mindfulness meditation and transcranial direct current stimulation on knee osteoarthritic pain. As an Institutional Research and Academic Career Development -Mentored Experiences in Research, Instruction, and Teaching (IRACDA-MERIT) Scholar, Lisa receives support for her postdoctoral research from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIH/NIGMS).
Being the daughter of school teachers, I observed the positive, lasting impact that my parents had on their students. Some of their students were classmates and to this day they talk to me about how my parents inspired them. Although I did not pursue a career in pedagogy, I included teaching as a life goal. As a teacher, I hope to inspire students to be the best possible versions of themselves and build confidence to accomplish their life goals.
