I offer Antenatal Classes in South Wellington for expecting parents and have been doing so since 2009. I worked for Parent Centre Aotearoa for 6 years, until it very sadly closed at the end of 2024.
As a Registered Obstetrics Nurse currently working as a Lactation Consultant in the hospital, I provide you with evidence-based and up-to-date information.
We explore all the options together so you can make informed decisions, especially for when things don't go as planned in situations such as labour and breastfeeding. My classes are inclusive spaces where you can ask any question you want and where every parent's unique journey to pregnancy is respected.
Classes are open to everyone, and your partner/support person are always welcome. The classes are an opportunity to connect with other expecting parents and form your own "village" with people who will be facing similar challenges as you; some groups stay connected for many, many years!
There is a focus on emotional preparedness for birth and beyond; my hope is for parents to have realistic expectations, to feel empowered and to be able to decide what is best for them and their baby.
Classes will cover:
Pregnancy:
Pregnancy warning signs
Labour stages and coping tips for every stage.
When to call your LMC/go to the hospital
Pain relief options/inductions/interventions/C-sections
Postnatal - the part we have the most control over and where my passion lies:
Breastfeeding – challenges, positions, latch, and so much more from a very experienced IBCLC – International Certified Lactation Consultant with 16 years of experience
Mental Health- how does Perinatal Distress (PND) look like? When can it appear? What can you do about it?
First few days/weeks/months with your baby at home - the most common challenges and how to address them
Parenting – brain development, exploring parenting styles and values
Sleep – your baby and yours
Practical Stuff - Settling, nappy changing, burping, bathing, layers, choosing childcare, returning to work.
Classes are taught using a mix of presentations, discussions, videos and activities. The morning goes by quickly!
Courses run for 2 Saturday or Sunday mornings (from 8:45 am to 1:30pm) with a nice break for morning tea each time, so you get to know the other parents. I find that morning classes are much easier than evening ones; people have more energy and are keener to listen and to connect with one another.
The classes are held in the Home of Compassion, a beautiful spacious venue in Island Bay.
