A quiz made on LingoLabOnline can be shared with students via URL or QR code (perfect for in-class testing), with no log-in or registration required (like a Google form).
Use any of the default sets on common grammar points (with Japanese-English sentences), or use your own custom set.
The teacher can see respondents' per-question quiz results (including time taken to complete) in a sortable table as soon as they have been submitted, which can also be downloaded for Excel.
N.B. the cue for LingoLab questions is actually rendered as an image, which means that users can't use a Google Translate add-on to help them get the answer! (unlike a Google Form)
Below is a video to show how you can see student's progress WHILE a quiz is in progress - handy for checking that everyone has started properly and which question each student is currently up to. Just click the blue refresh button in the top left of the table to see the latest progress.
Progressive hint mode for single-word vocabulary tests
While the LingoLab format was originally intended for sentence-level practice, it can also be used for vocabulary tests with a special behavior for items of 3 words or less. In the cases in which the target item is a 3 words or less, the hint box is always shown as a standard length regardless of the length of the target word. (This is different than the display for questions with longer answers - in which case the approximate length of the target words is a necessary hint for reducing the possibility of alternate correct answers )
A special default mode for this purpose has been introduced to provide a 'progressive hint' mode, when the quiz mode is set to 'hidden letters'. In this case, the words on tiles are first displayed in 'hidden letters' mode (e.g. 'bird' is shown as 'b..d'), but if the user makes a mistake, all of the tiles then display the full words (e.g. 'bird' is shown as 'bird').
This special mode was introduced in order to allow teachers to determine the degree of familiarity that students have with the target vocabulary - active recall is needed to answer correctly in 'hidden letters' mode, whereas just passive recall is required to answer correctly when the full word is shown.
LingoLab quizzes always deduct one point from each questions score for each mistake made. Therefore, in this progressive hint mode, it may be the most useful for teachers to set the score as 2 points per question, and then the teacher can easily see from the quiz results which items were answered correctly in hidden letters mode (getting 2 points), and which were initially mistaken in that mode, but subsequently correctly answered in the shown word format (getting 1 point).
