I am currently completing my Capstone Internship with IU Health in their Digestive and Liver Disorders (DaLD) Department. Since starting my internship I have been able to shadow several leaders in the company, as well as getting to shadow the clinic manager and a physician's assistant. I am completing a study to analyze wait times in our clinic, and suggest improvements.
Perform registration and rooming audits to observe and identify long wait time causes and bottlenecks in the process.
Observe the data to identify any commonalities and reoccurring issues.
Develop professional skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork through working alongside professionals every day and learning how to appropriately work together.
I believe that I have achieved this objective as I have shadowed many professionals and observed their professional skills and built mine in the process.
Strengthen my time management skills by staying organized and ensuring that deadlines are met consistently.
I have met this objective by always arriving on time for my internship in order to start my data collection at the beginning of each day. I have also learned to stay organized and keep track of each patient's information for the data collection process.
Gain insights on operations and the organizational structure from the various health professionals I will be working alongside.
I have met this objective by shadowing many professions and learning what I may be interested in doing in the future. I have learned about who reports to who, and what positions work in the clinic versus in the offsite office building.
Strengthen my skills with LEAN by working with the principles daily and learning more effective ways of operating business and improving processes.
I have definitely strengthened my LEAN skills through participating in my organization's weekly Value Stream Steering Team (VSST) meeting and also attending their VSST Refresh.
Skills Built During My Internship:
Reliability
Punctuality
Lean Processes
Interpersonal Skills
Communication
Improved my EMR Knowledge
I believe my LEAN Principles class prepared me well for this internship, especially because a lot of the work I did was with LEAN and thinking of ways to improve the registration and rooming process.
I also think my Professionalism class prepared me for this internship as well because I knew what business casual clothing looked like, I knew how to be professional in meetings, I knew how to be professional when introducing myself to someone, and I also knew what kind of intern to be.
I will be continuing my journey in health care through obtaining my Healthcare Facility Administrator License. I have accepted a position as an AIT, and will be in training for a couple of months, and then will be able to take both the state and federal tests to obtain my administrator license. I am also interested in obtaining a Master's Degree in Health Administration in the future as well.
