I chose epidemiology as my public health concentration for a myriad of reasons. The overarching reason reflects on my passion for understanding and tracking disease frequencies across the globe, especially in vulnerable communities. Epidemiology will enhance my learning of health disparities and master program initiatives to prevent disease and prolong life.
This paper describes a possible long term goal of being involved as an epidemiology member under the American Public Health Association. APHA holds their annual meeting for opportunities to learn, inspire, and connect with the public health community. In 2021, APHA held 60 sessions during their meeting and a total of 248 presentations were available to view.
The overarching mission of Stand for Animals is to reduce the number of new litters within the Charlotte area. During my time as a vet tech, I assisted on approximately 120 spay and neuters per week and overall prevented about 6,240 unwanted litters in the year 2020. Stand for Animals continues to deliver exceptional nonprofit care and prevents the over-staggering number of euthanized pets due to overpopulation.
Example of specific surgical devices and their code
The Infection Control Department located within the University of Missouri's hospital system works with public health departments to ensure that the infections that pose a risk to the public are properly addressed. My role within this internship included entering in surgical codes into a database that kept track of any new surgical site infections. I also rounded the floors of the hospital to keep track of patients who were in isolation and that the correct PPE equipment was provided before entering the room, and the correct warning labels were present on the room door.
