Welcome to my website! My name is Lily Bulman, and I am a senior at The College of Wooster. I am a Theatre and Global Media Digital Studies (GMDS) double major, with a focus on design and digital studies.
At The College of Wooster, we have what we call an Independent Study (I.S.) which is a yearlong project of our choosing that demonstrates what we have learned in the past four years.
I have chosen to do an immersive shadow puppet show that specifically highlights the designers in theatre. This website will keep my blogs and vlogs in order to document my creative process. I got in the habit of blogging as a way to communicate with my parents when I studied abroad last year, a practice that I have continued back at Wooster. I have found that looking over those blogs can be an invaluable aid to my memory of the experiences I had in London, and a record of how my thoughts evolved over time. I hope that this website will serve a similar purpose as I work through ideas for my I.S.
For my performance, I plan to create an immersive shadow puppet show of the story Narcissus & Echo, a Greek myth that many in the audience should be familiar with. However, I would like the puppets and the design elements to be pre-recorded and projected on the walls of the performance studio so that audience members can choose where to look, thus making their experience more immersive. For this I am making shadow puppets in a way that I have not done before and I have reached out to an art teacher I had for ten years back home for instruction. To reinforce the myth of Narcissus as an embodiment of self-love whose fate was literally immersion (consumed by his own image in a pool of water), I plan to make one wall of the studio a wall of mirrors in which audience members will see their own reflection, and also on which I hope to find a way to project some of the story.
