YouTube is owned by Google, and so a YouTube account must be connected to a Google account for full, unrestricted access. From their own account, a parent would be able to create a profile for their child or connect to their teen's existing account.
Parents can choose from three kid-specific experiences:
A separate app that provides a simpler and safer experience for kids under 13.
Content is restricted based on the content setting chosen (preschool, 4 and under; younger, 5-8; older, 9-12).
Parents are able to handpick the content their child has access to and set screen time limits through either the YouTube Kids app or the family center.
No separate google account required.
A parent-managed version of regular YouTube for kids under 13.
Content is restricted based on content setting chosen (explore, 9+; explore more, 13+; most of YouTube). Doesn't include age restricted content, but the 'explore more' and 'most of YouTube' settings allow viewing video comments.
Parents are not able to handpick videos, but can block channels and report videos they deem inappropriate. Parents can set screen time limits through the family center.
No separate google account required.
A voluntarily supervised account that connects the teen's account to their parent's account.
Both parties need to agree to link their accounts before supervision can be turned on. Supervision can be turned off by either party at any time.
Content is only age restricted. Parents cannot implement content settings. They can set up screen time limits.
Parents can set up 'take a break' and bedtime reminders, and set a limit on time spent scrolling through shorts.
Once linked, parents can view their teen's channel activity. See the list of viewable activities here.
Age restricted content is only available to signed-in users with an age-verified account.
YouTube currently uses an AI system that analyses the viewing and searching habits of an account and the account's age to determine if the user is likely an adult or not. However, this system can gotten around.
