Charles McShane grew up in Orland Park and continues to live here with his wife have two children. Charles graduated from St. Michael's and Carl Sandburg High School.
Orland Park has always been my home. My parents built their lives here, and now I am doing the same with my own family. The town has grown and evolved over the years, but it has always maintained its strong sense of community. The library has been a constant part of that, serving as a place for learning, discovery, and connection. As a child, I spent countless hours exploring its shelves, and now I get to watch my own children enjoy everything it has to offer. Libraries are more than just places with books, they are essential hubs that provide resources, programming, and opportunities that enrich the lives of people of all ages. That belief is what first led me to get involved, and it is what continues to drive my passion for serving on the Library Board.
Serving as a Library Trustee has allowed me to contribute to shaping the library’s future in meaningful ways. I currently serve as the Board Secretary and am a member of the Building and Maintenance Committee, Personnel Committee, and Law Committee. My background as an IT manager has given me extensive experience in problem-solving, strategic planning, and decision-making. I work closely with leadership, not only identifying opportunities for improvement but also ensuring that plans are successfully implemented. Managing projects, budgets, and personnel has taught me how to navigate complex challenges while keeping long-term goals in focus. These skills translate directly into my work with the library, where strong leadership and careful planning are essential to maintaining its growth and success. My ability to analyze situations from multiple angles, work collaboratively, and make informed decisions ensures that the library continues to serve the needs of the community effectively.
Beyond my professional background, I am committed to making Orland Park the best it can be. I have been involved in local food drives, worked with community organizations on elections, and continue to engage with local initiatives that bring people together. Speaking with other residents at my daughter’s Pioneer Cheerleading practices or during gymnastics at the Sportsplex is always a reminder of how much people in this town care about their community. Orland Park offers the amenities of a large city while keeping the warmth of a close-knit town. The schools are outstanding, the parks and outdoor spaces are beautiful, and the people here genuinely look out for one another. It is that strong sense of connection that makes this town so special, and it is why I want to continue giving back.
Keeping the library moving forward is a priority. While some towns have allowed their libraries to stagnate, Orland Park has continued to invest in its future. The library has expanded its technology offerings, introduced a Library of Things, hosted concerts and live events, and developed programs that serve all members of the community. This momentum needs to continue. The library must be a place where people can work, learn, and gather, whether they are looking for a quiet space, educational resources, or community engagement. It is important to preserve the classic definition of a library while also embracing new opportunities to serve the evolving needs of residents. The library has shown incredible growth following the challenges of the pandemic, proving that people still value a place that offers knowledge, creativity, and connection. I am committed to ensuring that Orland Park Public Library continues to serve as an innovative and welcoming space for generations to come.
