THE DESIGN: Bald Pate
HEMISHERES: The Left and Right Brain
HEMISHERES: The Left and Right Brain
This character is inspired by the functions of the left and right hemishere's of the brain. The right brain is responsible for creativity and artistic processes. The left brain performs logical thought. The character is inspired by model, Josie, an aspiring scenic artist. She is a talented young woman in her junior year of college. Her ethnicity is incidentally white. She that is showing the duality of the designer's brain in it's artistry and intellect.
I am expressing the duality of the brain, by creating a split face look. I will use a bald pate to paint an artistic representaion of each side of the brain. I will create contrast in the use of color vs. black and white, as well as soft flowing shapes vs. geometric patterns. The right side will be brightly colored in brainlike folds of color in a painterly fashion to represent artistry and creativity. The Left side will be a black and white look utilizing the shapes and interconnecting lines of a flow chart to represent logic and systematic thought.
This is an image depicting left and right brain functions. I like the creative side being colorful.
This is a spit face look that uses human tones and bright color on one side, and a black and white look on the other. I like the greyscale shading on the left side of the face.
This is the work of Ay-O. They use rainbow colors in screen printing to create human and other figures. I like how the bands of color contour the shapes of the figure.
This is a make-up look that emulates heat mapping. I especially like this color palate.
This is another split-face make-up look contrasting color with black and white. I like the rainbow eye make-up on the right.
This is an artistic representation og the hemispheres that shows circuitry for the left brain, and a colorful floral right brain. I like the interconnected shapes that show sytematic processes.
This is abasic flow chart structure. Ovals, rectangles, diamonds and rounded squares are used here. I like these simple recognizable shapes.
This is an optical illusion tatoo that looks like a hole. I like this idea, and may apply something similar to the left eye socket with the idea that it leads into her head.
This is an illustration that demonstrates where the brain sits within the head. I like this reference to the placement on the skull.
This is an image of a brain with multiple colors. It is intented to appeal to people with ADHD. I like it because I think people with ADHD have some of the best artistic minds.
This is a painted bald pain look that uses bright saturated colors, as well as a split with a beauty make-up. I like that the brows have been covered by the bald pate, and the artwork etended onto the face.
This is an image representing left and right brain with artistic and logic imagery. I like the color palate, and the contrast to the black and white.

I was pleased with the ability to create this look. I think that the bald pate was smooth with well blended edges. It was fun working with a model that was not a student in the class, as it helped me practice explaining what I was doing to my model, who has no prior knowlege of the process. I did feel rushed to get the final touches of make-up on. The amount of painting in this design needed more time. In the future it would be wise to simplify the design when the application time is limited.
