The purpose of this assignment was to create an annotated bibliography for sources used in my Autoethnography. An annotated bibliography is different from a traditional bibliography, because you must write and expand on/explain the sources you chose. This is incredibly useful for readers, because it shows them exactly where I got my information and quotes from. This was a great way to give credibility to my paper.
I chose to write about the importance of people attending live sporting events. For most of my life I have attended many sporting events per year, and the positive effect it has had on my social life and overall enjoyment of life cannot be understated. The sense of community you feel while rooting for the same team as those around you is a kind of magic feeling. I think many people do not give much thought to this idea. Many people attend a sporting event and have a wonderful time, but no one thinks about the possible benefits it can have on your life.
Adams describes his experiences with sports and how they helped shape his worldview. Also, how important they can be for young men to try and find a purpose or some way to express themselves. “What we're left with is sports. It could be the last bastion by which we give the characteristics and virtues by with which we raise men.” (Adams).
This talk highlights sports as something that impacts the world and people far more than we might realize. It can be a beacon for people to make something of their lives and to give themselves a sense of purpose.
A new study finds that going to sporting events in person could potentially have positive effects on health for some. While it’s on a case-by-case basis, many people who reported going to many sporting events were also more likely to report that they felt their lives were good. “The analysis showed that attending a live sporting event made for higher self-reported scores on life satisfaction and lower scores on loneliness.” (Blakemore). This is a very interesting study and a nice rebuttal to those who think sports are a waste of time.
The concept of how a city is thought of after hosting a major sporting event is talked about in this article. When a city must host a major sporting event there is a lot of pressure on the city because it could have a tremendous impact on how the rest of the world thinks about a particular city “The results verified that the fit between host city and sporting event is a useful antecedent variable of city image.” (Oshimi).
This is very relevant when it comes to the topic of sporting events. This really demonstrates how important sports are for people. For a city to really have to be on its best behavior for a period of time simply due to a sporting event being held there is pretty powerful. Sports really have an impact on how people view certain places, and this article really drives that home.
I interviewed my aunt about the Yankees game we attended in 2017. We shared mutual feelings over the importance of the game and the great fun we had. “Oh my gosh. Probably the loudest place I’ve ever been in. I just remember immediately being worried for [my 6-year-old son’s] safety. Thankfully, it turned out I didn’t have to worry about anything.” (Wiley). This interview helped refresh my memory and allowed me to mentally step inside the stadium again, so I could more accurately represent my time there.
When writing about something deeply rooted in firsthand experiences, it is important that you have a firm understanding of what your emotions were at the time. Memories can fade so talking to someone who was there to experience something with you can help to put you right back in that moment.
Witz describes the events of game 5 of the 2017 ALCS. This is the game that my interview is based on. The game, and the series as a whole, was heavily favored toward the Houston Astros, but despite that, the Yankees were able to take three games to two lead. This was a huge game in recent Yankees history and would be the closest the Yankees would get to the World Series since 2009. “It also continued the drastic shift in the American League Championship Series that began with Tuesday night’s rousing comeback victory for the Yankees. After winning three games in a row at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees will head to Houston with a three-games-to-two series lead, on the brink of their first World Series appearance since 2009.” (Witz).
I attended this game, and it is one of the main reasons I chose to write about this. It was the first time I remember thinking that live sporting events were more important than we were always led to believe. Something that creates such joy and a sense of community had to be something more powerful than everyone was giving it credit for.
