Gui Concepting and Lookdev

OVERVIEW

This is a look at the GUI Art for a dark fantasy game with Astrological magic and demonic enemies.

Inspired by Alphonse Mucha and the Blackletter work of Benjamin Laukis, I intend to create a medley of Neuveux and Gothic themes.

This game will include a card system, dialogue, choices, astrological factions and much more. The purpose of this it to explore GUI and UX for games while working towards a larger world building excercise.

Aries

Capricorn

Taurus

The Astrological theme is  a key part of the design choices for this thought excercise. For these pendants I sketched the concepts in procreate and modelled them in Zbrush before taking them to photoshop to apply a painterly texture them and turn them into icons that can be used in various aspects of the game.

What's on the cards?

Cards are a way to present boons to the player in a familiar way, having something physical and diagetic for them to collect and create  a unique character with each playthrough.

Each card will display an attribute bestowed upon the player by their chosen constellation.

This should provide a short summary while a later window could provide a more in-depth description and potential stat boosts for the player.

Each card will have the pendent emblem of a constellation on it, shape language will follow the gothic script and circular astrological motifs.

Custom graphics will be made for each attribute, some attributes will be bestowed by multiple constellations while others will be unique.

The card backs will allude to choice and the stars, using a similar deep golden color scheme as most ornaments and UI elements will share.

Dialogue and text Boxes

Text boxes are super important in a story driven game, style is less important then clarity but a good blend of both if ideal.

Keeping with the themes of dark magic I've created a Blackletter text box, having a dark background with bright writing should allow the text box to stand out from any game background and ensure the writing is legible at any point.

Deciding on a final font will be a design choice I will have to make later as opting for a standard and easily read typography is often preferred over a stylized typography that may not be as easy on readers.

Branding, Logos and Social Media

Creating Simple branding and logos

A creator of a growing youtube channel  about game development had reached out for help updating his brand, he wanted a cartoon rabbit mascot, a clean letter based logo and a yotube banner.  Within 2 days i had his work approved and shipped in multiple formats. Looking forward to watching his channel grow and potentially animate the cute little character i made for him!

Both the Logos and the character went through as 6 to 3 to 1 process. Itterating on the pros and cons provided by my client.

YoutubeBanner design 1

A clean, dark and modern Banner design emulating the smaller Logo he ended up choosing for his channel.

Youtube Banner Design 2

A softer alternative to showcase the small rabbit character he commisioned as part of this project.
