Graduation Requirements
A total of 26 units of credit are required to graduate from Lyons High School.
4 units of English (I, II, III, IV or IVC*) (*English IVC required for KS Scholar) (*IVC – Dual Credit English IV)
3 units of Math (must include Algebra I)
3 units of Science (1 with lab)
3 units of Social Science (World History, Am. History, Govt/Econ.)
1 unit of P.E./Health
1 unit of Fine Arts
.5 Unit Career & Life
.5 Unit Speech – (Class of 2023)
.5 Unit Personal Finance (Class of 2023)
An additional 10.5 units of Electives (9.5 units for the class of 2023) are required.
*Students must enroll in a full schedule each year
* Three math credits must be taken at LHS to fulfill the requirement for graduation, however, Algebra I taken at LMS counts as an elective high school credit, not one of the three math credits required. It does, however, meet the Algebra I graduation requirement, and counts towards the curriculum grade point average.
(To attend a Regents University: KU, KSU, WSU, Emporia, FHSU, or Pittsburg)
Guaranteed admission if Students meet ONE of the following:
1. Score 21 or higher on their ACT OR
2. Graduate in the top 1/3 of their class, OR
3. Complete the Pre-college curriculum with at least a 2.0 GPA.
Students MUST complete the following curriculum with a 2.0 GPA:
4 units English (English I, II, III, IV, IVC*) (*IVC – Dual Credit English IV)
3 units of Science (one must be Chemistry or Physics)
3 units of Math (Algebra I, II, Geometry, Pre-calculus, Statistics, or College Algebra-Courses completed in middle school do not count toward the requirement.
*Students must meet the ACT college readiness math benchmark of 22 OR take a 4th math credit their graduating year (any course with Algebra II as a prerequisite)
3 units of Social Science (World History, American History, and Government/Economics)
Foreign Language recommended (but not required)
*Required for eligibility for Valedictorian and Salutatorian Awards and Gold Tassel

A fourth year of science is recommended.
4 units of Math (Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and 1 additional math combination of Precalculus, Statistics, Trigonometry, Intermediate/College Algebra)
3 units of Social Science (World History, American History, and Government/Economics)
2 units of Foreign Language (in one language)
*Students must have taken the ACT between April of the sophomore year and October of the Senior year to qualify as a Kansas Scholar.
Seniors will be recognized in the following manner:
Gold and Blue Tassel at Graduation - All Seniors with G.P.A. equal to 3.68 on a 4.0 scale or above will be recognized with a ‘Gold and Blue’ tassel.
Gold Tassel at Graduation - A standard of excellence will be established according to a student’s G.P.A. attained in a core curriculum. All students with a G.P.A.of 3.68 on a 4.0 scale or above will be awarded a gold tassel.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Students receiving these awards will be the first and second highest G.P.A on a 4.0 scale in the core curriculum. Ties will be broken with those students who have the same G.P.A. for Valedictorian in core curriculum by using the overall G.P.A for all classes, if a tie still remains those who are tied will be recognized as Valedictorians and no Salutatorians will be recognized if multiple Valedictorians are recognized
If more than one student has a 4.0 in the core curriculum or who tie for the highest G.P.A. – the tie will be broken using the above criteria and recognize all those students who tied for the highest G.P.A. in the core.
A student may enroll at the Learning Center upon failing a course at the semester or the end of a year. Seniors who fail a required course during their second semester will not be allowed to participate in commencement. Learning Center/Credit Recovery credits needed for graduation must be completed by May 1 to participate in commencement. A required course can be an elective if needed for the 26 credits for graduation. Failed courses that are needed to be taken in a sequential order must be completed by the August enrollment date.

GRADING PROCEDURES
All teachers at Lyons High School will follow this grading scale. An “in-progress” will count as an “F” for eligibility purposes.

Testing
Students take the following tests during their time at LHS:
PreACT (required for all, taken in 9th grade)
$ PSAT/NMSQT (optional for 10th and/or 11th graders wishing to take it)
ACT (given during Junior year, optional any other time during National test dates)
Workkeys (given during Junior year, required)
$ Each year, 1-2 ACT prep courses are hosted at LHS during the school day. Students my elect to participate.
*$ indicates the student is required to pay exam fee.
Students may sign themselves up to take additional ACT tests at any time during their high school career. Registration may be completed here.
