The intent of this project is to analyze how social media impacts society.
Ater taking the "Am I ADDICTED to social media?" QUIZ | Time to Log Off it confirmed what I already knew, and that is that I use social media too much. The results from the survey were that me and social media are PRETTY INSEPARABLE. "You might not be 100% addicted (yet!) but you definitely need to evaluate how much time you're spending scrolling on your social media accounts...". I can't say I disagree with the results; I do spend most of my time on Instagram and have moments when I can't stop scrolling. I don't feel it effects my mood, but it does affect my productivity.
This particular statistic stating the age gaps in use for certain social media platforms relates to me because it's something that I think about often. Me and my friends often say when someone primarily uses Facebook, they may be a little older than us and those younger tend to use TikTok and at times Snapchat more. My peers and I tend to use Instagram more and use TikTok at time but aren't that proficient in it. My mom and her peers use Facebook and my friend's children love TikTok. With all the different variations of social media it's interesting to see how different generations communicate through them and lot of the time the setup of the platforms alone is what makes us choose our preference depending on how savvy we are in updated technology.
I feel social media has both a good and bad impact on society. It allows people separated by distance connect and feel less lonely or isolated. You get to see life from different perspectives, good and bad, realizing that there are more options out there for you than you may realize and grounding you to the fact that there are others who struggle as you do or worse. Social media can also make you feel less confident when it seems like others have a more exciting life than you. It can also create unrealistic expectations in your personal and professional life. Overall, I think social media is impacting society by connecting us more, while also challenging us to protect our mental health and sense of self.
Social media is a very powerful tool, but its impact depends on how responsibly its used and your intentions. These platforms increase connection and access to information, but they do not replace human interaction and connection. While there are some of us that can manage how it affects our mental health, we should all take time to disconnect at times.
