For my second participation in SIMUN, I am honoured to be given the responsibility of Deputy Chair of a committee. I highly appreciate MUN because I believe it is a fruitful experience in which one can exchange and learn from others' perspective. Seeing different people, and perhaps more importantly considering different geopolitical positions, is a scarce opportunity in times when we tend to forget the diversity that still exists in our modern world.
I hope that I, along with all other Chairs and Delegates, will be able to experience a pleasant conference. Ultimately, the goal is for everyone to become a leader who chooses to listen rather than to impose, to learn together... and to enjoy themselves!
I do consider that preparing for MUN is tough, especially when the rewards seem unclear; nevertheless, the conference is an unequaled, rewarding chance and privilege.
I would like to conclude by thanking SIMUN for making this conference possible and giving me their trust to serve as Deputy Chair, Mr Xavier and Ms Amach for allowing us to enjoy this opportunity; and every participant for sharing their exceptional talents in this excellent conference !
Last year, I participated in SIMUN 2022, held online. I got to represent the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the UN Security Council. Although I was disappointed by the fact that the conference was held online, I still strongly wanted to take part in this MUN experience, where I was expecting to get a taste of the real world debating experience, with current issues posing threats to global security.
During the preparatory weeks, I have to admit that the workload was not light at all given the fact that I was a student in the "cycle terminal". The amount of research required for this project was absolutely phenomenal. So, I advise all students wishing to participate in SIMUN to carefully consider their workload. Furthermore, I could not personally agree with Afghanistan’s politics and state ideology, posing another layer of difficulty to the project.
Nonetheless, the research process thoroughly informed me of complex global matters. Moreover, the debating experience itself taught me how to interact with entities with opposing viewpoints in order to set a common ground, and how to effectively compromise without abandoning my country’s point of view.
On a final note, SIMUN is a challenging project, yet it will certainly provide all delegates a precious experience and opportunity to develop their critical thinking capabilities. Thus, I encourage all ambitious students to become delegates in MUN !
Delegates of the Security Council from LFS, SIMUN XVII, 2023
(Jae-In LEE, South Africa; Hyeongwon KIM, Afghanistan)
While doing SIMUN, I was able to meet new people and socialize with them. I became a delegate and represented a country. There were challenges that I had to overcome but it was a memorable experience.
It's my second year participating in the SIMUN conference. Last year, we had the conference online, but this year, we are going to Singapore, which is very exciting. I plan on studying economics and politics next year, so MUN is the perfect way to get familiar with this environment.
My first experience in MUN was at SIMUN XVII. Despite being held online, SIMUN XVII was an extremely valuable experience for me since it helped me develop my researching and debating skills and discover my interest for diplomacy. As I wish to study international relations in the future, I am participating in SIMUN XVIII with the hope and motivation to learn, exchange, and cooperate with peers from other countries to find solutions for current global issues.
As the delegate of Afghanistan in the World Health Organization in 2022, I was able to develop new skills from preparing a variety of proposals and amendments. It was a new and unforgettable experience.
As a first time participant, I am thrilled to be part of SIMUN XVIII in 2023. For a long time, I have been interested in various world issues and I am honored to not only be able to be part of a major event but also hone skills that could help me in the future.
Even if the Model United Nations requires a lot of work, I believe that as long as someone has an interest in world politics, it is definitely worth trying. While the first few weeks were difficult for me, I soon started enjoying being part of SIMUN as it was fascinating to learn about my country as well as my committee issue.
SIMUN is therefore a challenging yet enticing project that has definitely left a positive influence on my life.
"I participated in a united nations-style debate when I was a student. So you never know where this conference might lead. You could end up as a Secretary-General of the United Nations, or maybe your country's UN ambassador."
-(Former secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban-Ki-moon)
Today's youth is tomorrow's nation, and today's youth are us, students.
Model UN allows us to go beyond what we learn in the classroom and strive to learn about current international issues in this interdependent world.
Through this platform, we are united by the strongest bond of common interests, and it amazes me that the delegates sitting and debating alongside me could be future leaders, senators, and diplomats.
Model United Nations has truly opened my eyes to a world of potentialities, and has broadened my mind to a myriad of possible solutions to make our world a better place.
As a student who has remained in the LFS for 13 years, I am particularly curious about our more and more multicultural world and that is part of why I've become interested in this project. It's the first time I am participating in SIMUN and I've already learned to socialize with my surroundings. I believe that SIMUN is more than simple debating, and this novel approach has helped me acquire researching and argumentation skills. Above all, SIMUN is a challenging experience, but I consider it to be part of a learning process that will enable me to widen my vision of the world and get more in touch with our multicultural and diverse society.
I have always been very curious to know more about the world, nourished by my abroad experiences in Brazil, England and now in South Korea. In the context of my fascination with international relations and global governance, I decided to participate in SIMUN. I am looking forward to this conference as an opportunity to delve into the international issues of our time, to gain in-depth understanding of how institutions of international cooperation work, and to test my critical thinking and speaking skills. I am very excited to join this exceptional and enlightening experience!
This is my first year trying out SIMUN. These past couple months of integrating in the whole experience has made me realize that SIMUN is such a diverting way of learning how to represent countries as delegates and about world issues. I am awaiting the day of my arrival to Singapore as I find it will be a meaningful once in a lifetime experience that will allow me to grow as a person.
I am looking forward to participate in the SIMUN XVIII in Singapore in 2023. I am very interested in the topics proposed during this conference as well as in diplomacy in general.
This opportunity is for every delegate a way to improve their public speech skills and to meet new people.
Lastly, I would like to thank all the people who allow SIMUN to come to life.
Since I was very young, I was able to live in various countries, which led me to become very fond of the cultural diversity of nations and the geopolitics that form them. That's how I got my dream of becoming a diplomat, and I am hoping that the MUN will be the perfect place to have a true diplomatic experience.
This will be my first time participating in an MUN conference. As someone who enjoys debate and problem solving, I look forward to speaking with everyone involved to find solutions to our world's issues. I hope to bring valuable contributions to the conversations and more importantly, have a good time with all my fellow delegates.
I discovered SIMUN this year and because I am interested in law and international diplomacy, I was very happy to be able to participate to this conference.
Meanwhile meeting new people and working in new environment can be seen as an arduous process, it is astonishing how so much students can gather to share and debate as a representative of a country. Best of luck to all delegates!
I'm excited to go to Singapore and be part of the MUN project.
