During my freshman year of college, I was given the opportunity to brainstorm and draft an original screenplay. Because of my Biochemistry major, I don’t often get the opportunity to tap into my creative side. Therefore, it was both invigorating and exhausting to write a thirty-page, innovative screenplay.
This activity taught me a lot. First of all, I learned how to big-picture brainstorm. This project gave me the freedom to go any direction I wanted to. I also learned how to commit to finishing a long piece of writing, which is not an easy thing to do. I don’t usually have a lot of writing assignments in my STEM classes, so it was truly a learning curve to be able to articulate clearly on paper.
I also aspire to work in pediatrics someday, because I love kids and love to be creative with kids. Children have the best imaginations. Having a job where I can make people feel better while also exercising my creativity is a dream of mine. This screenplay project allowed me to exercise my creativity in a new way, which is directly applicable to my future. I also want to be a mom someday, and learning how to adapt to new assignments is definitely something I’ll need to tackle in my personal future. This is one of my favorite accomplishments of college because it is different from everything else I do, but yet so uniquely me. Retrospectively, it was a long, rigorous task that prepared me from the time commitments of my lengthy BIOC research paper and my UCARE research proposal.
