Last semester, I took my first biochemistry related class, BIOC 205, with Dr. van Dijk. BIOC 205 is a scientific writing class and has been the biggest challenge for me thus far in my academic career. In the class, we would read and comprehend scientific journals and reviews, and then we would write and articulate what we just read. It was the biggest learning curve for me. I learned how to better visualize the experiments being conducted in the journal articles, as I had done something similar in the lab prior. It showed me how to fail and pick myself back up again. I also learned how to utilize professors and office hours to my advantage, which has been crucial.
My degree in Biochemistry has been vital on my journey to become a doctor thus far, as it has challenged me to think in ways I’ve never had to before. As a physician, I will have to learn new concepts in medical school and beyond that I do not understand at first. I will have to work hard to comprehend, and I now have the skills and grit to be able to do so. This class also helped me be able to articulate my research proposal, which I wrote a few months after I completed the course.
