In November, I was elected to be the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for my sorority, Delta Gamma. This was not a position I had been running for, and therefore, I had a lot of learning to do as I wanted to do a good job. I spent a few hours with our former Director of DEI and got to pick her brain of ways to incorporate more DEI into our chapter. I have been able to use my creativity and innovation to come up with fun ways to get my chapter members excited to learn more. For example, I’ve done fun drinks for Women’s History Month, Diversity movie nights in our basement, writing letters to women who’ve inspired us on a typewriter, and more. Some ideas worked so well; some ideas flopped. Even still, I’ve been grateful for every idea and what it has taught me, such as the importance of diversity and surrounding yourself with people who are different from you. We need more inclusion in our world today, and it’s important to constantly be bettering yourself and others to create a more equitable future.
As a future healthcare professional, I always need to be working towards equity and access for all my patients. This mindset I’ve built will be crucial for my future in the field.
