Accessing birth control as a minor

At a clinic

  • As a minor in California, one can access birth control without parent permission at a Planned Parenthood or clinics like it.

  • One can pay with insurance, but there may be a statement in the mail that details the services accessed (like birth control).

  • To avoid the insurance statement, one can pay out of pocket. Some clinics, like Planned Parenthood, have programs that help cover the cost of birth control.

At a doctor's office

  • Make an appointment with a gynocologist (at Huntington Hospital, or a nearby office) or your general doctor.

  • Doctor-patient confidentiality prevents the doctor from talking to your parents about the doctor's visit, so you can have complete privacy!

  • Again, this visit (or the prescriptions for birth control) can show up on your parent/guardian's insurance statement, so the best course of action would be paying out of pocket.

at a convinience store

  • Most local convinience or drug stores sell basic birth control options like condoms, dental dams, or Plan B. You can access these methods with out-of-pocket money, and can be purchased at any age (like the rest).
