Here's what to look for in beauty products and cosmetics.
Hand In Hand
Impact: Cruelty free, recycleable packaging, uses sustainable materials, donates to charitable causes
Overview: Hand in Hand is a charitable and sustainable soap brand that gives one bar of soap to Our Neighbor's Children for each one bought, according to their website. Their Sea Salt fragrance is amazing!
The Body Shop
Impact: B Corp, activism, recycleable packaging, uses sustainable materials, cruelty free, advocates social change
Overview: The Body Shop makes self-care products such as lotions and soaps. It is a B Corporation and advocates for social change. For instance, the brand launched Isolated Not Alone which centered around awareness of domestic abuse, according to its website.
Zoya
Impact: Cruelty free, vegan, Big10free
Overview: Zoya is a nail polish brand that is cruelty free and vegan. In addition, their nail polish does not include 10 common harmful chemicals, according to their website.
Tom's of Maine
Impact: Not animal tested, gives to charity, some products have recyclable packaging
Overview: Tom's of Maine makes self-care products without artificial ingredients, according to its website. I recommend their products with tea tree oil, which is soothing to the skin.
Burt's Bees
Impact: Donates to charity, certified carbon neutral, cruelty free, recyclable packaging
Overview: Burt's Bees is a cosmetics brand that makes a difference and is certified carbon neutral. I especially like their lip balm, and their mascara is the only one I've tried that doesn't give me an allergic reaction.
E-salon
Impact: Cruelty free, recyclable packaging, uses recycled materials in packaging
Overview: E-salon is an online hair care brand that ships to its customers. Their products come in a recyclable cardboard box. In particular, their hair tint is a great product.
Raw Sugar
Impact: Cruelty free, mostly vegan, recycleable packaging
Overview: Raw Sugar is a natural and cruelty free personal care brand. I would recommend the vanilla bean and sugar body wash because it smells amazing and leaves you feeling clean. You can find Raw Sugar at Target stores.
Purezero
Impact: Cruelty free, vegan, recycleable packaging
Overview: Purezero is a beauty brand centered around natural ingredients. Purezero's apple cider vinegar conditioner is a must have if you have a sensitive scalp or oily hair. You can easily find this brand at Target stores.
Sun Bum
Impact: Uses recycled materials, FSC certified, recycleable packaging, Reef Friendly
Overview: Sun Bum is a popular sunscreen brand that does not contribute to environmental degradation. Unlike many sunscreen brands, Sun Bum does not contain ingredients like oxybenzone that cause destruction of coral reefs. I would absolutely recommend their sunscreen lip balm.
Jāsön
Impact: Cruelty free, vegan, recycleable packaging
Overview: Jāsön is a natural beauty brand that does not use chemicals in its ingredients. In particular, I would recommend their products with tea tree oil, which is healing for sensitive skin.
HiBar
Impact: No plastic, recycleable packaging, cruelty-free
Overview: HiBar makes plastic-free beauty products such as shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant. Their hair products come in bar form, and are packaged in recycleable paper/cardboard packaging. Their conditioner works really well and lasts a long time!
Pacifica
Impact: Vegan, cruelty-free, sustainable ingredients, recycleable packaging
Overview: Pacifica makes clean beauty products that are also all vegan and cruelty-free. They do not use harsh or toxic ingredients in their products. I would definitely recommend their Acne Warrior Clearing Astringent.
Mable
Impact: Compostable/recycleable packaging, limits plastic use, uses FSC certified bamboo
Overview: Mable makes zero waste products including toothbrushes, floss, and cotton swabs. Many of their products are made from bamboo and packaged without the use of plastic. I would recommend their silk dental floss, which helps to eliminate so much waste!
Avalon Organics
Impact: Uses plant based ingredients, vegan, cruelty free, packaging made from recycled materials
Overview: Avalon Organics sells skin care and hair care products using natural ingredients. Their tea tree shampoo and conditioner work very well and the bottles it comes in can be recycled at the end of use. This brand can be easily found at King Soopers, Target, and Whole Foods.
Things to look for when shopping self care products:
An indicator of an ethical brand is the Cruelty Free label, meaning that it does not test its products on animals. Furthermore, look for brands making their products out of sustainable materials and that advocate for social change.
