Pew Research Center shows that on most social media apps like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, the main users are people between the ages of 18 and 29. This directly relates to me since I’m part of that age group. Because so many young adults are active on social media, the way it’s used (whether positively or negatively) can really impact society.
My results from the "Am I ADDICTED to social media" quiz indicated that something about my usage of social media must change. I definitely agree that my usage of social media isn't necessarily concerning, but it should be decreased. I've noticed that the amount of time I spend on social media could have been used towards something more productive.
A study conducted among Americans found that 64% of people believe social media has a negative impact on our society (Auxier, 2020). Of those, 28% are especially concerned about the spread of misinformation, while 16% worry about hate and harassment on those platforms. In my opinion, it's not social media itself that is either positive or negative, but how it is used. The real issue comes from the lack of proper use. People who don't use social media are likely more prone to believing false news and engaging in inappropriate behavior online. Many people aren't fully aware of the importance of confirming that sources are reliable or fact-checking what they see. On top of that, some may forget that basic morals and respect still apply, even when they are behind a screen and using social media in private. I believe that if more people educated themselves on how to properly use social media, it could lead to more positive outcomes than negative ones.

By completing this project, I learned that most social media apps are mainly used by younger people. Because of this, many of these platforms are not always used appropriately. This is where the idea of digital ethics becomes important. Just like in the real world, there are rules of morality that should still apply online.

In this unit, I learned that people take the time to create licenses so others can use their original work properly. Before this project, I didn’t realize how important it was to find the correct licensing and cite it to respect the creator’s work
