Elementary Education Checklist, Applications and Licensure Information
Admission to the School of Education is required for all Elementary Education majors. Typically, candidates will apply to the School of Education at the end of the sophomore year. Candidates may not complete 300 or 400 level courses within the major unless formally accepted to the School of Education.
Traditional/Non-Transfer Students must meet the following requirements for formal admission:
Officially declare a major in Elementary Education;
Submit all application requirements below by May 1 or August 1
Pass EDU 301 and Spring Math Jury
Pass the Praxis Elementary Education: Mathematics—Content Knowledge for Teaching (CKT)
Pass the basic skills testing requirements
Submit proficient Educator Disposition Assessments from two School of Education faculty members
Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better at the time of admission
Pass EDU prefix courses with B- or better
Complete a criminal background check through Castle Branch and have a clear record within 12 months of the SOE application submission date; and
Submit the Application to Teacher Education by May 1 or August 1.
Transfer students must meet the following requirements for formal admission:
Officially declare a major in Elementary Education;
Submit all application requirements below by December 1;
Pass EDU 301 with a B- or better;
Pass the fall Transfer Jury;
Pass the Praxis Elementary Education: Mathematics—Content Knowledge for Teaching (CKT);
Pass the basic skills testing requirements;

Candidates seeking initial licensure in Elementary Education (K-6) must pass:
Praxis CKT Math (test code 7813) with a minimum score of 150;
North Carolina Foundations of Reading with a minimum score of 233; and
edTPA Elementary Literacy with a minimum score of 38 by the end of student teaching.
Licensure exam requirements are determined by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Candidates should check the DPI website for the most current licensure examination requirements.
Candidates will apply to student teaching in the spring semester of the junior year. Expand the form on this page to submit the application before the Pre-Student Teaching Jury.
At the beginning of the senior year, teacher candidates will be provided with the Internship & Student Teacher Handbook. The handbook outlines the policies, expectations, and procedures for the fall internship and spring student teaching semesters.
After graduating from LR, candidates should submit the materials to apply for initial licensure. Candidates cannot submit the application until the LR transcript is complete and shows the date of program completion.
