Secondary Education Program Checklist, Applications and Licensure Information
The program checklist for Secondary Education, minor is coming soon to be posted here for candidates and advisors as they make academic plans for each semester.
Students should major in or close to the academic field they wish to teach.
Admission to the School of Education is required for all Secondary Education minors. Typically, candidates will apply to the School of Education at the end of the sophomore year. Candidates may not complete 300 or 400 level courses within the minor unless formally accepted to the School of Education. The following requirements must be met for formal admission:
Officially declare a minor in Secondary Education;
Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better at the time of admission;
Successfully complete basic skills testing requirements;
Submit proficient Educator Dispositions Assessments from one School of Education faculty member and one faculty member outside of the School of Education;
Complete a criminal background check through Castle Branch and have a clear record within 12 months of the SOE application submission date; and
Submit the Application to Teacher Education by May 1, August 1, or December 1 before the junior year.
Candidates seeking initial licensure in Secondary Education STEM or ELA/SS must pass:
Praxis II in your respective content area before starting student teaching*;
edTPA with a minimum score of 38 by the end of student teaching.
Licensure exam requirements are determined by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Candidates should check the DPI website for current licensure examination requirements.
Teacher candidates are responsible for the fees associated with taking Praxis II in the content area. Candidates who are eligible, may apply to ETS Praxis for a fee waiver online. Candidates should apply for a testing window that will allow for their passing scores to be reported by the program deadline.
*Teacher candidates in Secondary Education (BA/BS) are required to take the Praxis II Specialty Area Exams before their Senior year. Candidates must be within 10 points of passing the Praxis II prior to entering the Senior year. and must submit passing Praxis II scores prior to the end of Senior year.
At the beginning of the senior year, teacher candidates will be provided with the Internship & Student Teacher Handbook. The handbook outlines the policies, expectations, and procedures for the fall internship and spring student teaching semesters.
After graduating from LR, candidates should submit the materials to apply for initial licensure. Candidates cannot submit the application until the LR transcript is complete and shows the date of program completion.
