A movie review by Eli Smith
Author of the Original Book: J.K. Rowling.
Movie Overview: Harry Potter is an ordinary boy-or so he thought. It turns out, he's a wizard, and it's time for him to begin his education at Hogwarts, a prestigious school for young wizards. At Hogwarts, he makes new friends, and even a few enemies. But the real enemy is far more dangerous than the petty Draco Malfoy. His name is Voldemort, and he will stop at nothing to get to Harry. Based on the iconic children's book by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone will delight both kids and adults.
Movie Studio: Warner Brothers.
Director: Chris Columbus.
Genre/Age Rating: Fantasy, action-adventure. Rated PG (7+).
Language: Minor language such as "stupid" and "idiot" appear. Minor British slang like "bloody" and "blasted" also show up often. "God," "Good God," and "For God's sake" are also used. Uses of the h-word, d-word, and a-word appear, though only once or twice.
Violence: A character named Uncle Vernon threatens another character with a gun, he shoots the gun but it is pointed at the ceiling and doesn’t hurt anyone. Harry’s parents are said to have died in a car crash, it is later explained that they were murdered by Voldemort, a scene shows Voldemort killing Harry’s mother with an intense blast of green light. A ghost character named Nearly Headless Nick exposes the inside of his neck, organs are seen. A character named Neville falls off his broom and breaks his wrist. During a game of Quidditch bludgers attack players and one player falls to the ground unconscious. Harry crashes on his broom and coughs up a golden snitch. The characters fight a troll, Harry sticks a wand up its nose and then they drop a large stick on its head, rendering it unconscious. There is unicorn blood found in the forest and mentions of a dead unicorn. The characters come across a dead unicorn and a hooded figure drinking its blood. The characters are strangled in a plant called “Devil's Snare”, though no one is hurt. Harry gets sliced and cut by a small army of winged keys, he is slightly bloody. During a game of life size chess Ron is knocked down from a statue of a horse and is shown unconscious, but he is alive. Professor Quirrel tries to manhandle Harry but his hands are burnt to dust when Harry touches them. Harry grabs Quirrel’s face and Quirrel’s whole body crumbles to dust, he is dead. Dumbledore says that Nicholas Flamel will die soon.
Romance/Spice Level: There's no romance in this movie.
Faith: A character says "bless my soul" and there is a ghost called the Fat Friar.
Additional Content: There is a pub in the movie, and mentions of it as well. There are ghosts in the movie, though it's taken lightly and fun. A character uses a spell to try and turn water into rum. There's a somewhat frightening jumpscare where a face pops out of a book and screams. There are mentions of immortality. Voldemort's face being grafted onto the back of Quirrel's head may be a tad scary for younger audiences.
My Thoughts: Harry Potter, one of the most iconic book series of all time, makes its big-screen debut! Though the movie is a tad older (and the special effects show it sometimes), this movie is an absolute gem for readers of the books and movie fans alike. As someone who's read the books, it is definitely noticeable that they left out of the film or things that have been changed, but it's all minor and doesn't affect the story. The first films are targeted towards a younger audience (and so are the books), but I still enjoyed it a lot! I would definitely recommend it if you've read and enjoyed the books. In conclusion, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone will always be a timeless film that, no matter when watched, will always have the same charm as the first time.
