Yes, this is me. Yes I edited myself as Tiresias's number 1 fan.
If I had any more time for this journal, I think I would wholeheartedly write a diss track about Creon. But why would I need to do that when Tiresias basically did it for me?
In only five pages, Tiresias managed to put the most annoying king in his place. He may be blind, but he still read Creon to filth. I wanted to focus specifically on the line "Stubbornness brands you for stupidity - pride is a crime" from line 1137/8.
It sounds like a line I would get from my father when he's disappointed. However, unlike Creon, I would pull my act together (my dad can be scary, but a blind prophet sounds even scarier, to be honest).
In the Bible, we see that Pride is listed as one of the Seven Deadly Sins, so seeing someone in this era say that having too much pride is a downfall was really interesting to me. The fact that some pride might be what gives you the role of king (a little self-confidence never hurt anyone), but too much of it can make the whole city-state turn on you is really shown in this interaction between Creon and Tiresias. If Creon had changed his mind, had listened to his own people, his son and his wife wouldn't be dead. The arrogance that Creon had, saying that the body wasn't going to be buried no matter what, astounded me. At what point do you just give it a rest, buddy? Creon's stubbornness, as Tiresias rightfully pointed out, is really what did him in. And I'm glad Tiresias said that to him. Tiresias even said a couple of lines prior that everyone makes mistakes, but Creon's unwillingness to admit that maybe Antigone was right, made everything so much worse.
