1.1 Discussion: Profiles of Emerging Models
- Read, "Blending Learning: The Evolution of Online and Face-to-Face Education from 2008-2015" and (skim) Educause article, "Breakthrough Models for College Readiness." Review the different school profiles and choose at least one profile to highlight for your individual discussion post.
- In your class discussion area for Discussion 1.1, write the name of the profile you chose, and share a few of the highlights that you believe are interesting (include any critical questions you may have about the program). Describe how the scenario in the profile you read might be applied in your district or school.
- Include a hyperlink of the school's web site and embed (or link) a video highlighting the school if available.
- Respond to two other student posts according to the expectations in the Discussion Rubric below.

This Module spent significant time addressing different elements of online and blended learning, such as:
- Teacher-centered vs. learner-centered
- Activity-rich vs. media-rich
- Online vs. blended vs. face-to-face
- New social and learning dynamics
Activity
- Create a Venn Diagram or Infographic using a Web 2.0 tool such as Mindomo, bubbl.us, Google Drawings, Creately, Piktochart, easel.y, Canva or another you discover that compares/contrasts the features/characteristics of online, blended, and/or face-to-face teaching. You may choose to compare two of the three teaching methods or all three. Keep in mind that (by definition) the intersection of online and face-to-face is NOT blended learning. You may also choose to take the perspective of the student and/or teacher.
- Embed or upload your diagram to the area designated by your instructor. When possible, please use embedding as the preferred method to display your work.
- Add a short description of your Venn diagram that explains your thought process.
- Take a few minutes to explore the Venn diagrams created by other students.
For many of these resources, you will need to create an account which is typically free.

All reflection assignments should show a thoughtful consideration of the topic. Reflections are expected to be written in standard English, and are typically 300-500 words in length. Reflections may include hyperlinks to outside resources, embedded Web 2.0 tools from this course, and/or properly cited images.
Write a post responding to the following:
- Thinking about the definition of online and blended learning, to what extent are you able to currently personalize, help your students connect with other peers or teachers outside their classroom, enable students to have some control over "time, place, path, or pace," and all students to create using technology tools?1
- How might your instructional methodologies need to change in an online or blended learning environment? What skills and strategies might you improve or expand upon in order to best support student learning in a blended or online environment?
- Choose a focus of reflection for this course, blended learning or online learning, and respond to one of the two prompts below. (Maintain this focus throughout the course in your reflection responses.)
