To be honest, I think this class is a bit difficult. Although I took a similar class last semester, I still find some of the content very complicated. The easiest one for me would be to draw a tree diagram because I already have experience. As for other parts like syntax and morphology, I still spent some time on it. Furthermore, I think the frog story assignment is quite interesting because we need to look at pictures and then extend the story. However, it still took us some time. To summarize, I have gained a better understanding of part of speech through this class.
I have taken linguistics-related courses before, so I have some knowledge of linguistics. It helps me catch up this course faster, but I also have a little struggle in the beginning of this semester. At first, I felt that I could distinguish the tree diagram better in this course, but it still confused me a lot. Fortunately, I became more familiar to the linguistic study. I can practice frequently during the class, so I have a growth on how to separate the sentences to part of speech and how to put the sentences into the tree diagram.Towards the end of the course, I found that I will come up a sense of achievement while drawing tree diagram. Sometimes, there were different types of tree diagram, we may not know the two types of the meaning about sentences, but we can recognize through the tree structure.
During my sophomore year, I had already taken a similar course, and at that time, I found it challenging to comprehend words and grammar structures. It took me some time to catch up with the course. However, due to my previous exposure to such content, the material for this semester seemed comparatively easier. I realized that having a foundation from a similar course allowed me to understand the current semester's content more comprehensively. I gained a deeper understanding of the structures and origins of words and sentences. Learning these challenging concepts enabled me to delve further into understanding grammar structures and pronunciation. This course has equipped me with the fundamental principles of English. Additionally, as I aspire to become a teacher in the future, this knowledge will be immensely beneficial to me.
Through this semester of this class, although I had the background knowledge of the context, it’s still hard and complicated for me. However taking the linguistics course again has made me even more familiar with morpheme, syntax, and morphology. And I liked the chapter about part of speech the most because I think create our stories by ourselves is interesting. In addition, we can not only enhance our writing skills and understanding story structures through creating our own stories but also gain a deeper understanding of the structure of each word in a sentence by specifying its part of speech. I can also enhance my creativity through associating stories. Although we made quite a few mistakes, the process of correction has helped us gain a better understanding of part of speech.
After completing the course on English linguistics, I gained a deeper understanding of the structure and evolution of language. Though I some background knowledge of linguistics, I still think it is the most difficult coures of this semester. However, there are some familiar parts that really helping when I'm solving the problems, and also I have some great teammates that assisting me to understand the difficult part. In sum, combined study of morphology and syntax has not only deepened my understanding of language as a complex system but also enhanced my analytical and problem-solving skills.
