Affixes are morphemes, which are the smallest units of meaning in a language. These morphemes can be added to a base word to alter its meaning or grammatical category. There are two main types of affixes: prefixes and suffixes.
Prefixes: These are affixes added to the beginning of a base word. They can change the meaning of the word or create a word of the opposite meaning. For example, adding "un-" to the word "happy" results in "unhappy."
Suffixes: These are affixes added to the end of a base word. Suffixes often change the grammatical category of a word (such as turning a verb into a noun) or indicate aspects like tense, number, or degree. For instance, adding "-er" to the verb "teach" creates the noun "teacher."
Affixes play a crucial role in the flexibility and expressiveness of a language. They allow speakers to create new words, convey nuanced meanings, and adapt language to various contexts. Understanding affixes is essential for decoding unfamiliar words and expanding one's vocabulary in a language.
The formation of plurals in English depends on the type of noun. There are some general rules:
1.Regular nouns: example: cat → cats
2.Nouns ending in -s, -x, -z, -sh, -ch: example: box → boxes
3.Nouns ending in -y preceded by a consonant: example: city → cities
4.Nouns ending in -y preceded by a vowel: example: toy → toys
5.Irregular plurals: example: man → men

Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. It analyzes the structure of words and parts of words such as stems, root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
A morphology tree is used to explain how morphemes are arranged in relation to one another to form a word and can also help to illustrate the distinction between morphemes and syllables.
We can understand word structure by revealing relationships between morphemes, and also identify morphological processes like derivation and inflection through drawing morphological tree.

Midterm project
The midterm assignment required us to delve into morphemes and allomorphs, as well as the standard plural suffix and its variations in English, through group collaboration. Initially, we faced some confusion in articulating the concepts of morphemes and allomorphs. However, by consulting numerous relevant resources, we gained a deeper understanding of their distinctions and corresponding definitions. Despite the practice and instruction provided by the teacher in the preceding weeks, it was through collaborative efforts within our group that we truly grasped these concepts.
Handling the standard plural suffix and its variations in English posed a challenge when it came to identifying suitable words. This difficulty stemmed from our relatively unfamiliarity with the construction of words. Therefore, before searching for matching words, we needed to clarify the rules governing the various variations in order to identify exemplary words that adhered to these rules.
