You may have heard the saying.
This idea was posited by the Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, two and a half thousand years ago.
Today, physicians are discovering more and more diseases (intestinal and extraintestinal) that are correlated with leaky gut.
"Leaky gut syndrome is a theory that intestinal permeability is not only a symptom of gastrointestinal disease but an underlying cause that develops independently. If your intestinal barrier is impaired, it may be letting toxins into your bloodstream." [1]
This was written by the Cleveland Clinic, who pioneered many medical breakthroughs, including coronary artery bypass surgery and the first face transplant in the United States.
Inside our bodies, our digestive system has more than 4000 square feet of surface area of extensive intestinal lining.
Think of this as a barrier, like the Great Wall of China, guarding the inside of our bodies.
When our barrier is working well, it is tightly sealed, carefully controlling who is allowed in and who stays out!
We want all those precious nutrients and minerals to be nicely absorbed... and all those toxic chemical pathogens to stay out!
All of this screening defence work is done at the junction between the inside of our bodies and the outside world.
This junction is a one cell thick layer... (yes you read that right, only one cell thick...) masked with mucus.
Its name is the Gastrointestinal Epithelium.
Our digestive system is scientifically called the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
And the GI tract is basically a massive tunnel passing through us!
The Gastrointestinal Epithelium covers the whole length of our digestive systems, all the way from our mouth to our rectum... In an adult human, the entire digestive tract unfurled is a whopping 30 feet (9meters long)
So when our digestive systems are working properly, Our inner body is safely protected from the outside world!
Phew....
But what happens when we encounter plant toxins like Lectins, Flavonoids and Oxalates?
Suddenly, there's too many pathogens attacking the guards! And the sentinels simply can't fend them off. The castle junctions are broken, and suddenly, our barrier is under siege!
No longer is our inner bodies protected.
This is what is meant by the scientific term: "increased gastrointestinal permeability"!
It means our epithelium becomes porous.
Our tight junctions separate and come apart, allowing all the toxins in our food to enter the bloodstream!!!
This then activates our immune system armies.
This is why our skin breaks out into such terrible eczema!
Our bodies manifest the inflammation as eczema, while others manifest it as Arthritis, Crohn's Disease, or even Parkinsons!
I'll cover this in greater depth in the next few weeks!
We allow our tight epithelial junctions to become destroyed when we choose to eat those inflammatory foods!
So the lesson is, stop eating the inflammatory foods...!
At least temporarily...
We need to give our gut, our GastroIntestinal Wall, time to rebuild and reform stronger!
