In my Field Production course, I had the opportunity to create a short documentary on any topic while in a group with my peers. We decided to focus on the recent legalization of recreational marijuana in the state of Connecticut. Our storyline followed inconsistencies that were occurring in towns who only allowed medicinal companies to sell the substance, although these companies were owned by recreational corporations.
Our goal was to make a video at least 10-15 minutes long, while applying audio, lighting, and camera techniques learned in class to our documentaries. We also had to have a specific amount of interviews in our films, and once we had all of the footage needed we were tasked to edit what we had into a final production.
This assignment not only gave me more insight on how important each piece of equipment is in creating a film, but how important the editing process is as well. Before taking this course, my knowledge was very minimal on cameras, audio, lighting, and editing software. With weeks worth of practice and going out in the field applying what I learned, I left the class with a deeper understanding of these components and it has helped my creativity grow greatly.
