Will I have to pay the tuition upfront and receive the reimbursement later?
No, the tuition will be paid at the beginning of each semester by the grant.
What happens if I am offered a leadership position before the 5 years is completed?
If a participant leaves in the middle of a semester, the tuition for only that semester would need to be paid back.
Please know that this program is intended for a cohort to complete the five years together, so participants are strongly encouraged to commit to the full five years of the program.
When will I receive my stipends?
You will receive two stipends yearly at the end of the fall and spring semesters. These will be paid once the semester work is completed.
What difference will the program make on my tax return?
You will need to report the income stated on your 1099-MISC when filing your annual tax return.*
What IRS form can I expect to receive from MTSU?
MTSU sends each student a Form 1098-T Tuition Statement. You will also receive a form 1099-MISC for your stipend income.*
Is my fellowship stipend considered earned income by the IRS?
The stipend is considered taxable income but not earned income.*
