Jews came to the area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and prospered in the copper boom. The synagogue, prominently located near the waterfront, was dedicated in 1912. Temple Jacob is one of two synagogues in Michigan that remains in continuous service and at the same location and our beautiful building is listed on the Historical Register. We have a service leader for the High Holy Days and are a lay-led congregation the rest of the year, celebrating Shabbat and other Holy Days, offering Torah Study, Religious Education, and participate actively in interfaith activities. Our service area includes Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon, and Baraga counties (an area larger than the state of Maryland!) in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula.
