Our mission is to support ALL individuals struggling with a leaning disability, even adults. Adults with LD who are of a certain age may not have been evaluated and/or diagnosed while undergoing primary and secondary education. Protections and indentification of younger children and young adolescents with LD was not designated under federal law until Congress passed IDEA in 1990. This transformed the public education system in supporting students with disabilities with Special Education.
If you are an Adult who was never identified, evlauated, or diagnosed with a learning disability, in either your primary or secondary education career, and suspect that you may have a learning disability, we can support you!
How can I get an Evaluation for LD as an Adult?
LDA CT is dedicated in supporting adults going through the evaluation process. you can contact us through our facebook page or by email (ldaconnecticut@gmail.com). We would be more than happy to set up a conversation to obtain additional information about your experiences, hardships, and needs regarding a suspected learning disability.
LDA CT has partnered with the Connecticut State Bureau of Rehabilitation Services and the Department of Aging and Disabilities Services to provide a process for assisting adults with the evaluation process. To be eligible for obtaining an evaluation through the BRS/ADS, an individual must demonstrate hardships and difficulties within employment due to a suspected learning disability. Counselors will help determine eligibility based on interviews about needs and barriers due to a suspected learning disability.
If BRS/ADS determines an individual is not eligible to receive an evaluation through their services, there are alternatives in obtaining an evaluation to determine if an LD diagnosis exists.
There are many private clinics, groups, and organizations that also conduct LD evaluations for adults. The link below, from the Collaborative on Postsecondary Education and Disability page on the University of Connecticut website, provides a list of localized specialists who can conduct an evaluation and provides background information, website information, contact information, and location. How can I get help with covering the costs associated with an evaluation?
If BRS/ADS determines you are eligible to receive an evaluation through their services, all costs/fees associated with the evaluation will be covered in full.
Check with your health insurance provider to see if they can help cover some, if not all, the costs associated with an LD evaluation.
Where can I find services and/or supportive programs for employment and/or educational needs?
BRS/ADS offers vocational programs and services to eligible individuals based around seeking employment, job coaching, and maintaining employment. Many of the private clinics, specialty groups and organizations around Connecticut also offer various services and programs for adults who struggle with a learning disability.
