Meet Team Javawocky

Team 14799 Javawocky was founded in 2018 as Laurel Christian High School’s robotics team. Our goal is to expand FIRST in our community while maintaining Christian beliefs. We compete annually in FTC and have made it to State in both of our previous seasons. The mission of our FTC team is to inspire future generations of young innovators as well as promote STEM in our local communities. We hope to inspire and encourage other teams through our work and Christian background.

Team Values

FIRST is about more than building a robot. It is designed to promote STEM and STEM education while developing important teamwork, public speaking, and entrepreneurship skills imperative for all careers. We embrace the program and aim to raise the bar by continually improving not only ourselves as a team but as individuals. Through this, we aim to inspire others to do the same.

We compete in the spirit of Gracious Professionalism and share this spirit with all other FIRST teams. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and teaches to respect individuals and the community. With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions.

Javawockys aims to carry FIRST with us after we graduate. We will do this by not only using the skills and abilities we have gained and developed in college and the workforce, but also by creating, coaching, mentoring, and volunteering with FIRST teams after we age out of FIRST. We do this to share FIRST with the generation of students after us and to give back to the program that built us.

Overview of First Robotics Program

The mission of FIRST® is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Gracious Professionalism and “Coopertition”

Gracious Professionalism is part of the ethos of FIRST. It's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.

With Gracious Professionalism, fierce competition and mutual gain are not separate notions. Gracious professionals learn and compete like crazy, but treat one another with respect and kindness in the process. They avoid treating anyone like losers. No chest thumping tough talk, but no sticky-sweet platitudes either. Knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended.

In the long run, Gracious Professionalism is part of pursuing a meaningful life. One can add to society and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing one has acted with integrity and sensitivity.

Coopertition® produces innovation. At FIRST, Coopertition is displaying unqualified kindness and respect in the face of fierce competition. Coopertition is founded on the concept and a philosophy that teams can and should help and cooperate with each other even as they compete.

Coopertition involves learning from teammates. It is teaching teammates. It is learning from Mentors. And it is managing and being managed. Coopertition means competing always, but assisting and enabling others when you can.

We express the FIRST philosophies of Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition through our Core Values:

  • Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.

  • Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.

  • Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.

  • Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace our differences.

  • Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.

  • Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!

Scholarship Opportunities for Team Members

High school students who have participated or are participating on high-school-level FIRST Robotics Competition and/or FIRST Tech Challenge teams can apply for FIRST Scholarships. Most FIRST Scholarship Providers request applications during a student's senior year, but there are a few scholarships available to juniors or college students. Each scholarship may also have other eligibility requirements as set by the provider. Eligibility requirements are available at www.firstinspires.org/scholarships

FIRST Scholarships are offered and administered by the scholarship providers. Scholarship providers are primarily four-year colleges and universities, but also include community colleges, technical schools, corporations, and associations. Most FIRST scholarships are merit-based scholarships and may be renewable each year by maintaining an acceptable academic average. Each scholarship is unique and has its own award amount, eligibility requirements, application requirements, and application deadline. Most applications are due between December and April of the last year of high school/12th grade, but applicants should pay close attention to individual deadlines. Each FIRST Scholarship has its own application process and may require an essay and/or a recommendation letter from a mentor or coach. Most opportunities are made available each year, so future applicants should become familiar with the opportunities in the program in preparation to apply during their eligible year. Opportunities, applications, and details about available scholarships can be found at www.firstinspires.org/scholarships

Fundraising & Outreach Commitments:

Our team will have 2 fundraising projects each year: one in the Fall, and one in the Spring. Projects will solicit money from the community through the sale of goods or raffle tickets. (An example of this would be a candy sale).

Our team will have 1 or 2 outreach projects each year. These are typically technology-based projects or demonstrations that educate the public about STEM education, robotics, and the FIRST program. An example of this would be a booth/display at a local festival or event.
