This clip features Soldedad Barrio & Noche Flamenca, a flamenco dance company. Flamenco is a highly technical and expressive Spanish dance form. Flamenco is characterized by hand clapping, percussive footwork, and intricate hand, arm, and body movements. The dance is typically accompanied by a singer, guitar, and can be accompanied by other instruments as well. Soledad Barrio & Noche performed at Lincoln Center Out of Doors in 2016. Listen to the music.
Take a deep breath in for two counts and out for two counts. Take a deep breath in for four counts and out for four counts.
Today we will explore flamenco movement. Take a deep breath in, let it out, and stretch one arm out. Do the same with your other arm. Take a deep breath in, let it out, and stomp one foot. Do the same with your other foot.
Today we will explore passion and emotion. Take a deep breath in and hold a hand over your heart.
Continue to breathe and stretch as you listen to the music. Move to the music.
What do you notice about the dancers?
What are they wearing? What does this tell us about them or the dance?
What do you notice about their facial expressions, or how they move their bodies?
What words would you use to describe their movements?
How does the movement make you feel?
2. What do you notice about the music and musicians?
How would you describe the music?
How does the music make you feel?
Does the music connect to the dancing? Why or why not?
How do the dancers move differently to the guitar and the percussion?
Example: I wrote the word theaters, hiking, joy, connected in my passions and emotions lists. I created a 'theater' by drawing a horizontal line across the bottom half of my page to make a stage, and curtains on the sides of my page. I drew a trail for 'hiking' under the stage. I drew a circle to represent the word 'connected'. I drew sparks coming out of the circle to represent the word 'joy'.
What is your favorite form of dance?
Does the dance form flamenco remind you of anything else? If so, what?
If you could ask the dancers one question, what would it be?
