Marta Periera da Costa graces the David Rubenstein Atrium stage for an intimate evening of Fado music.
Something to know:
Marta Pereira da Costa is the first and currently the only professional female Fado guitarist worldwide.
Fado (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈfaðu]; "destiny, fate") is a music genre that can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal, but probably has much earlier origins.
Today Fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure.
In popular belief, Fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of fate, longing, nostalgia and melancholia.
Marta’s instrument is the Portuguese guitar, an instrument very closely associated with Fado.
In this performance from March 14, 2019, Marta infused elements of jazz into the genre of Fado music, creating her own unique sound.
Warm Up

Listen to the music
Take a deep breath in for two counts and out for two counts.
Take a deep breath in through your nose for four counts and exhale through your mouth for four counts.
As you inhale, stretch your arms above your head and slowly bring them down as you exhale.
Move your body to the music any way you like.
Reflection / Discussion
1. What do you notice about the musicians?
What are they wearing?
What instruments are they playing?
Can you hear the individual instruments?
How do they interact?
What expressions do they make while playing?
2. What do you notice about the Portuguese/Fado guitar?
What do you notice about its shape?
What do you notice about the number of strings?
How would you describe the sound of the Fado guitar?
3. What do you notice about the music?
How would you describe the music?
How does the music make you feel?
Allow the music to transport you to somewhere else for a moment.
Where does the music take you?
What images do you see in your mind’s eye?
Meditation and Visualization
Since we are experiencing Fado music from Portugal, let us “travel” through the music with our minds’ eyes.
We will use breathing and meditation to focus on these four aspects while we visualize our travels:
Where will you travel?
What will you see and experience there?
Who will you encounter?
How will you feel?
Activity Video
This video will take you through the extension activity below with a facilitator. You can choose to watch the video and do the activity along with it. Or, you can read the activity and participate by scrolling down.
Step 1: Breathing and Meditation
1. Find a comfortable spot and allow your body to settle in.
2. Take in a deep breath.
Inhale through your nose and count to 4 and exhale through your mouth.
3. Repeat several times until you feel your body relaxing.
4. Play the music again and close your eyes.
Move to the music in any way you feel comfortable.
Step 2: Visualization
1. WHERE will you travel?
Allow the music to transport you to a place where you want to travel.
It can be somewhere you love or an imaginary place.
2. WHAT will you see and experience there?
Allow your mind’s eye to look around and explore your surroundings.
As you breathe in, think of the details in the space that surrounds you.
What do you see, feel, smell, and taste in the place where you’ve traveled?
3. WHO will you encounter?
Who will join you on your travels?
Are you by yourself or with others?
4. HOW will you feel?
What emotions do you feel on your travels?
Are you excited, happy, playful in this space?
As the music comes to an end, slowly bring yourself back to the space.
You can wiggle your toes and fingers. Become aware of the sensations in your body and where you are sitting or standing.
Step 3: Reflection
What was it like to be transported by the music?
Can you describe your experience of the visualization? What did you see, smell and feel?
What are you noticing about how you are feeling now?
Was there a moment or image that you enjoyed the most? Why?
Art Making
Create an artwork inspired by the experiences you had during your visualization.
Supplies:
Paper and a writing utensil
First, divide your paper into 4 sections.
Each section will explore the things you focused on during your visualization.
Where you traveled
What you saw and experienced there
Who you encountered
How you felt
Then draw or write your experiences in each section, reflecting on where the music took you.
In my example, I visualized being on a beach in Portugal.
I felt the cool breeze, smelled the salty air.
I spent time with family and friends.
I felt happy, relaxed and playful.
