Community Profile: The Samahan ng May Iba’t Ibang Kakayahan sa Dabaw (SAKADAB) is an organization composed of 27 physically challenged individuals from Los Amigos, Tugbok, Davao City.
SAKADAB members dreamed of having their own homes and their own livelihoods. In 2010, backed up by their determination, different organizations came together to make their dreams into reality. Around 1,500 volunteers helped construct their houses which were completed in 7 days. Their place is now called SAKADAB-GK Village.
SAKADAB members are all unable to walk or stand. WIth this, they are limited on what they can pursue as their livelihood. But they are committed to achieving their goal of improving the quality of their life and to become self-reliant. So they acquired various skills and came up with their current businesses including beadwork and crocheted items which they turn into small purses and key chains, face masks, table mats. Its members also operate a consumer store, and they also bake.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the members SAKADAB, who are considered one of the vulnerable groups, were not able to sell its products. Visitors are also not allowed to go to their compound. They rely mostly on relief these days and income they get from sewing face masks. But there is a big opportunity for baking products in Davao City. Since they are bakers, SAKADAB intends to expand its baking business, make use of online platforms to sell its products and work with delivery partners to reach its target consumers.
