Community Profile: Lamut Multipurpose Cooperative located in Sitio Lamut, Beckel, La Trinidad, Benguet was founded in 1991 with an initial membership of 30 persons. Currently, the cooperative has attracted almost 200 members, mainly cut-flower and vegetable producers. The group is one of the providers of Malaysian mums, anthuriums, and other varieties of Benguet cut-flowers.
The coop's main business is cut flower production. But after the lockdowns, the coop could not bring the flowers to their usual markets (Baguio public market and in Dimasalang in Manila) and had to throw away the flowers. Even the plants that have not flowered were pulled out because of no demand. With no buyers, Lamut MPC members decided to convert to vegetables in the early part of the community quarantine. Now, with the easing of quarantines and opening of markets, there is a new product that is sought after, potted plants. Lamut MPC would like to take advantage of the plantito and plantita trend and sell potted flowering plants such as anthuriums, mums and daisies, instead of cut-flowers.
