Community Profile: The BASHACO (formerly Baslay Farmers Association) is a community organization of farmers based in Dauin, Negros Oriental. For several years, Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has worked with these farmers to transform them from "kaingeros" (slash-and-burn farmers) to "green warriors" not only to preserve the forests within EDC's geothermal project, but also to improve the quality of life of its host community. Through continuous capacity-building, community-engagement, and technical assistance, the BFA has been transformed into a dynamic community organization that currently operates a coffee enterprise.
These environmental stewards, now members of BASHACO, has made a mark in the coffee industry as one of the leading coffee associations and brands in the Province of Leyte. The BFA story was also featured in the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Philippine Business for the Environment's (PBE) book and video documentary "Transformational Business: Private Sector Contributions to the SDG's Report"—a first of its kind in the country showcasing businesses that are aligning their activities and core business processes with the Sustainable Development Goals.
