Stone Lab Field Trip! August 6th, come out, bring friends, fun times!

LCAS (and friends) Trip to OSU Stone Lab on Gilbraltar Island at Put-in-Bay

Activities (quick list):

Port Clinton to Put-in-Bay by Miller Ferry

Ride to Town, either, cab, transit bus, or cart rental

Water taxi from Boardwalk Restaurant to Gibraltar Island

Tour around OSU's Stone Lab/ Gibraltar Island

Back on water taxi

maybe get lunch somewhere, many options

Take cab or golf cart to the Aquatic Visitor Center (ODNR)

Next, cab or cart to Perry's Monument

explore the rest of the island, loads of gift shops, bars, etc.

last ferry leaves the island at 9pm, don't miss it!

Get to Miller Ferry in Port Clinton  ( MillerFerry.com )  5174 E Water Street, Port Clinton, OH 43452

Buy your ticket to Put-in-Bay, $9 each way (kids 6-11, $1.50)

Ferries leave every 1/2 hour

Vehicles are $23 each way (last car ferry back is 6pm)

I suggest getting the 8am or 8:30 ferry

arrive at The Miller Ferry Lime Kiln Dock

At this point you need to get to the Boardwalk Restaurant on the square.

Options are cab, bus, or cart rental. I really would like to share a cart with some folks.

Riding the former school bus is a hoot too. Only $2.50, but you have to hike from the terminal across the square (1/4 mi.)

cabs are $3 cash, tip your driver too!

4 person cart is around $120 and the one place has a deal where you get a discount on ferry tickets too,

so if you're interested in this approach let me know before the day.

Meet at the Boardwalk Restaurant 15min before tour starts to get water taxi to the island ($10 round trip)

I'm shooting for the 10a tour because there is plenty to do on this trip, so be at the water taxi before 9:45

Tours at Stone Lab are 10a-12p or 1p-3p On Thursdays only until Aug 13 ( https://ohioseagrant.osu.edu/visit/gibraltar )

Cost for Tour is $15 ($7 for kids)

We'll get a presentation in the lab building telling us a bunch about the lab and the island, then a walking tour of the 6.6 acre island.

We'll see Cook's Castle, glacial grooves, maybe some water snakes, and other features of the lab and island

back to PIB at the Boardwalk Rest.

Either lunch or head to Aquatic Visitor Center,

we have  no firm times to hit at this point so everybody can do their own thing

The Aquatic Visitor Center is an ODNR facility built in 1907 as a fish  hatchery

Perry's Monument,352 ft high, on a clear day you can see Canada, Cleveland and Toledo from the top. Bring the good camera!

No other hotspots to recommend. Soak up some island culture. Loads of giftshops, bars, people watching, etc.
