Laboratory for Cognition, Affect, and Neurodevelopment (LCAN)
Our research explores the neuropsychological foundations of learning and development across the lifespan.
We focus particularly on fluid reasoning and reading, examining how cognitive processes support academic achievement from early childhood through adulthood. Participants in this work include preschoolers, children, adolescents, and university students.
A second line of inquiry investigates cognition–emotion interactions and their impact on functional outcomes such as social and academic success. Here, too, our studies span development from early childhood to young adulthood.
LCAN collaborates closely with the Dyslexia Assessment & Diagnostic Services Clinic within the University of Cincinnati’s Behavioral Health Center. Through this partnership, we analyze extensive archival data—cognitive and achievement tests, parent and child questionnaires, and computerized task performance—to better understand patterns underlying learning differences.
The overarching goal of our research program is to advance the field toward developing novel, neuropsychologically informed assessments and interventions. While we may not directly create new interventions ourselves, our work aims to provide the theoretical and empirical foundation that makes such innovations possible.
LCAN is a multidisciplinary, multi-site team of researchers, including psychology faculty, doctoral and undergraduate students, and research collaborators from the School of Education and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
