Layāli and Amanés – Journey into the Maqam, Echoes of the Mediterranean explores the deep musical connections between Arab-Andalusian traditions and Greek Rebetiko.

From the evocative ya lil, ya lil of Andalusian Spain and North Africa to the profound aman aman of Asia Minor and Greece, the project unites two ensembles: Ensemble Andalusí del Mediterráneo (Granada, Spain) and Aman Rebetiko (Kavala, Greece). Their collaboration creates a musical dialogue where centuries-old melodies, modal structures, and improvisation transcend borders, expressing timeless Mediterranean themes of love, exile, and longing.

Musicians from Ensemble Andalusí del Mediterráneo and Aman Rebetiko meet through modal melodies, improvisation, rhythm and song. Arabic and Greek voices intertwine with oud, qanun, violin, guitar and percussion, creating a sound that is rooted in tradition yet fully alive in the present.

Rather than presenting history as a reconstruction, Layāli and Amanés turns this shared heritage into a vibrant concert experience. Love, exile, longing and belonging become a common musical language—revealing the Mediterranean not as a border between cultures, but as a space of encounter, movement and shared memory.
