What is a national board-certified health and wellness coach?
National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWCs) are credentialed members of the healthcare industry. They are trained professionals who serve as a behavior change agent and a supportive accountability partner. They guide individuals looking to enhance their well-being through self-directed lasting changes that align with their values.
What do health and wellness coaches (NBC-HWCs) do?
They engage individuals and groups in evidence-based, client-centered processes that facilitate and equip clients to develop and achieve self-determined, health and wellness goals. Some examples include:
- Goal Setting: Help you define realistic, values-based health goals.
- Action Planning: Develop practical plans for diet, fitness, stress management, and sleep.
- Behavior Change: Use psychology and motivational techniques to foster lasting habits.
- Accountability: Provide support and check-ins to keep you on track.
- Education: Teach you about healthier choices and self-management.
- Holistic View: Consider emotional, environmental, and spiritual aspects of wellness.
How is coaching different from seeing a therapist or a nutritionist?
While therapists focus on clinical healing and nutritionists focus on prescriptive plans, I focus on integration. As an NBC-HWC and Patient Advocate, I help you take the 'what' from your medical team and turn it into a realistic 'how' for your daily life, meeting you where you are right now. What is the difference between your Coaching and your Advocacy/Doula services?
Health and wellness coaching is about internal change, behaviors, habits, mindset, and goals. Advocacy is about external navigation, such as helping you prepare for medical appointments or get a second opinion, explaining medical jargon, and ensuring your voice is heard in the healthcare system. Cancer doula support is about personalized emotional support, guidance through the cancer journey, communication, and setting boundaries. Most of my clients choose an integrated package that combines both for total support.
Do you offer a free consultation or "Discovery Call"?
Yes. I offer a laser-focused 15-minute Discovery Call to ensure you are a good fit for coaching, and I am a good fit for you.
Who do you work with?
Although I specialize in the unique stressors faced by healthcare professionals and those navigating cancer diagnoses, my board-certified training allows me to support any individual ready to make a serious commitment to their vitality. If you are driven to change but feel stuck and would like an accountability partner, you are in the right place.
What does a typical coaching session look like?
The agenda for the sessions is client-driven. Sessions are typically 45–60 minute conversations where I review your wins, navigate obstacles, set 1–3 actionable goals for the following week, etc. Each session can vary based on your needs.
Do sessions take place in person or virtually?
Sessions take place via Zoom using a HIPAA-compliant software.
How long should I expect to work with a coach to see results?
There are no "quick fixes." I recommend a minimum of 3 months, as it takes time to break old habits and cement new ones.
Is health and wellness coaching covered by insurance?
Currently, health and wellness coaching is not directly reimbursed by most insurance providers. However, as an NBC-HWC, I am part of the national movement toward clinical integration. Many clients find that the investment in coaching saves them thousands in the long run by preventing burnout, reducing sick leave, and improving chronic condition management.
Can I use my flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA)?
Yes, you can generally use HSA or FSA funds for health and wellness coaching, but it usually requires a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a licensed healthcare provider stating the coaching treats or prevents a specific, diagnosed medical condition. General wellness or prevention alone is typically not enough to qualify for these pre-tax funds. I can assist you with this process if needed.
