Community Based Learning

Special Olympics 

Yearly we would host Laveen Special Olympics. All Life Skills and Self-Contained classrooms participated in 10 events. I was part of the planning committee and designed the t-shirts. 

Laveen Parade 

Every year all the schools and community partners participated in the parade. My classroom students and staff helped make all the tye-dye t-shirts for us to wear. We won first prize for our float. I was the red crayon as well. 

Cooking Club

I started the Cooking Club at the school. During covid we cooked via Zoom. The students participated making each recipe live with staff and would wear their aprons. The students and parents all got involved and we created a community during a time when we couldn't see each other.

Mentoring 

The school counselors started a mentor/mentee program for students that needed to be checked on throughout the day. I had the honor of meeting Anthony when he was in 5th grade. I stayed his mentor until the 8th grade when he graduated. We continue to keep in touch and I cheer him on during basketball season.
