Lauren Swenson: MAET - Annotated Transcript

This page examines the courses that I have taken through the Michigan State University's Master of Art in Education Technology (MAET) program, with a transfer course from Purdue University. The courses are listed in chronological order and organized by semester. For each course, I have provided the course title, instructor, and a brief description of my experiences within the course.

Fall 2018

EDPS 53300: Introduction To Educational Research I: Methodology - Dr. Youli Mantzicopoulos

This course was a transfer course taken at Purdue University in place of CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Research. In this course, I learned about the foundations of research design through case studies. As part of this course, I was also paired with a faculty member and became their research assistant for the semester. Within this position, I analyzed the data for the research and helped prepare the research paper to be presented to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Purdue. This allowed me to put into practice the concepts I had learned in the lectures and to use my technology skills to present the data in a meaningful way.

Fall 2021

CEP 816: Technology, Teaching, and Learning Across the Curriculum - Dr. Brittany Dillman

This was my first course within the MAET program, and I selected this course to be my first because I was extremely interested in implementing technology into all aspects of the curriculum. Within this course, we learned about new media text and tools (NMTT) and how to use them to aid learning in a meaningful way. This led to a semester-long project on revising a previously created learning experience and embedding technology to meet the needs of all the students. This course shifted my mindset about technology, that it's not used as a fun tool, but as an aid for learning to meet the needs of all students.

Spring 2022

CEP 800: Learning in School and Other Settings - Dr. Stephanie Jennings

This course was a reminder of all of the theories of learning that I had learned in my undergraduate studies. In CEP 800, I designed a personal theory of learning. At the beginning of the semester, I created a first draft, based only on my prior experiences and learning. Then, throughout the course, I learned about how people can learn in and out of school environments through changes in their behavior, the mentorship of experts, socializing with others, authentic learning activities, and consistent feedback. As I learned about the additional theories of learning, I updated my theory of learning to represent current research-based best practices.

Summer 2022

CEP 810, 811, and 812: Mindsets for Innovation Hybrid Strand - Mary Wever

In the Mindsets for Innovation Hybrid course, I took on three classes within six weeks in a hybrid format, four weeks online and two weeks on MSU’s campus. Throughout the courses, I learned about how creativity, questioning, and using effective resources play into learning. This course was surrounded by a book study over the case for effective inquiry from Warren Berger’s book A More Beautiful Question and reflected on this study (and more) in different blog posts. Over the course of this program, I participated in many quickfires to push me through the design thinking process.

Fall 2022

CEP 818: Creativity in Teaching and Learning - Colin Gallagher

In CEP 818, I focused on one singular concept, fractions, and used the book, Sparks of Genius, to analyze this concept in many different ways that I normally would have not thought of. Throughout the course, I looked at the concept of fractions through the lens of perceiving, patterning, abstracting, embodied thinking, modeling, and play. I also looked at how to realistically incorporate creativity into an everyday school environment through interviews, assessments, and creating professional development presentations.

CEP 820: Teaching Students Online - Dr. Anne Heintz and Madison Allen

In CEP 820, I was tasked with taking a few lessons within a preset curriculum and developing them into an online learning course. In order to do this, I had to research several learning management systems, and select one that best fit the needs of myself and my students. While creating my lessons, I learned about the research behind online learning and the best ways to present information in order to create a successful learning environment, even when teaching from behind a computer screen. When creating my online course, I also developed a communication system, grading policy, individual lessons that allowed for multiple ways to complete the tasks, and a summative assessment.

Spring 2023

CEP 817: Learning Technology by Design- Dr. Anne Heintz

Within this course, I learned about the Design Thinking Process and the different stages of problem-solving. While learning about the design process, I was also tasked with designing a solution to my own problem. To do this I went through the five stages of design thinking (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test) and create a testing report at the conclusion of the design process. Along the way, I had plenty of opportunities to revise my thinking based on truly defining the root of my problem and brainstorming practical solutions that could be implemented. I was also able to collaborate with my colleagues, who aren't familiar with the design thinking process, to develop solutions to benefit my school.

CEP 807: Capstone Seminar - Dr. Matthew Koehler

This course brought up the end of my time in the MAET program. Within this course, I compiled all of the work that I have created during my time at MSU, and reflect on myself as a learner. To do this, I created this online portfolio, selected the creations that best show the skills that I have honed within my classes, and designed my next steps as a life-long learner. I was able to create this portfolio to meet my future needs as a technology coach, in order to showcase my skills to anyone that I share this website with.
